In the center of Ilona Johanna Plattner’s art we find the female mystic, a fictitious character, virtual in terms of its potentiality of being. The reflections of this potential figure have been mirrored on the website www.dieMystikerin.de for about seven years. For the exhibition „nodes”, this central character in the oeuvre of the artist from Münster will be incarnating for the very first time. In three acts, the artist links the location and its history with the procedures and reflections of the mystic. The term „act” rather refers to the action itself than to different scenes in a play. And it also exceeds the duration.
The first act deals with the past, involving diary-like lyrics and flyers, which have to be read in one blog. Further on her reflections are incorporated within the scope of activities during the second act (concretely fictitious) and after the performance in the third act (fictitiously concrete), which extend the conventional concept of an exhibition and supplement the material displayed. She uses the potentiality of the internet to make the proceeding feature of her work comprehensible and to broach the issue of it. For this reason the mystic refers structurally to a genuine phenomenon of contemporary art: The conceptual density of her performance facilitates the proceeding feature and non-seclusion which is key to perception. With regard to the content, the performance isn’t just restricted to physicalness, locality, reality, fiction, vision, but also deals with the idea of history, its stories and materialisation. Therefore the „Städtische Museum Schloss Wittringen” in Gladbeck functions as the center of this temporary personification – the museum becoming itself the subject of the performance. The mystic locks herself in the moated castle and goes out on a limb. She incorporates the history of the locality, but utilises its actual environment – e.g. the watery surface – as a means of expression. From the prehistoric findings to the tragic hostage-taking nineteen years ago, historically labelled as „Gladbecker Geiseldrama”, the artist is looking for traces for a re-staging and understanding from a mystic point of view.
